How it works

Gingerols and shogaols accelerate gastric emptying, reduce intestinal spasm, and inhibit 5-HT3 receptors involved in nausea and gut motility.

Generally very safe. Can interact with blood thinners at high doses. Supplements standardised to gingerol content are more reliable than raw ginger alone.

Why limited evidence

Limited RCT evidence specifically for IBS. Good evidence for ginger as a prokinetic and anti-nausea agent. Small studies suggest benefit for IBS motility symptoms.
