How it works

L-menthol relaxes intestinal smooth muscle by blocking calcium channels, reducing spasms and visceral hypersensitivity.

Must be enteric-coated to work in the gut. Plain capsules dissolve in the stomach and can cause heartburn. Take 30–60 minutes before meals.

Why strong evidence

A 2014 meta-analysis of 9 RCTs found peppermint oil significantly superior to placebo for IBS pain and global symptoms.
