How it works
Competitively blocks histamine H2 receptors on stomach parietal cells, reducing acid secretion by approximately 70% β less than PPIs but with faster onset.
Less effective than PPIs for erosive oesophagitis or severe GERD. Tolerance (tachyphylaxis) can develop with daily use. Best used for intermittent or pre-emptive heartburn.
Multiple RCTs confirm H2 blockers significantly reduce heartburn and acid regurgitation. A useful on-demand option for those who cannot tolerate or do not need a PPI.
