How it works

Magnesium deficiency is found in up to 50% of migraineurs during attacks. Magnesium stabilises nerve membranes and modulates NMDA receptors involved in cortical spreading depression.

A preventive, not an acute treatment. Loose stools possible β€” start at 200mg and titrate up. 400mg/day is the standard trial dose.

Why strong evidence

Meta-analysis of RCTs shows magnesium supplementation significantly reduces migraine frequency. Included in Canadian and German headache society prevention guidelines.
