How it works

D-Ribose is the rate-limiting substrate for adenine nucleotide synthesis. Supplementation may replenish depleted ATP pools in skeletal muscle after exertion.

Generally well-tolerated. Can lower blood sugar — use with care in diabetes or hypoglycaemia. Best taken with food and spread across the day in 3 doses.

Why limited evidence

A 2006 open-label pilot study showed significant improvements in energy, sleep, and wellbeing in fibromyalgia and CFS patients. Larger RCTs are lacking.
