How it works

Petasin and isopetasin inhibit leukotriene and histamine synthesis. Anti-inflammatory effect independent of histamine receptor blockade.

Use only PA-free (pyrrolizidine alkaloid-free) extracts β€” raw butterbur contains hepatotoxic compounds. Ze 339 is the best-studied extract. Not for pregnancy or liver disease.

Why moderate evidence

Three RCTs show Ze 339 butterbur extract is comparable to cetirizine for allergic rhinitis symptoms, with one head-to-head trial finding equivalent efficacy.
